World Environment Day is the United Nations day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. Since it began in 1974, the event has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries.

Above all, World Environment Day is the "people's day" for doing something to take care of the Earth. That "something" can be local, national or global. It can be a solo action or involve a crowd. Everyone is free to choose.

Each World Environment Day is organized around a theme that draws attention to a particularly pressing environmental concern. 2021’s observance of World Environment Day will be on the theme of ‘ecosystem restoration’ and focus on resetting our relation with nature. It will also mark the formal launch of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021 – 2030.

The theme of World Environment Day 2020 – mutually agreed by The UN Environment Programme and Colombia, this year’s host – invites us all to consider how we can make changes to our everyday lives to to draw attention to the need for restoring nature and reversing biodiversity loss.

Biodiversity – the variety of life forms in any given habitat, from large animals to plants to fungi to the smallest of organisms – is threatened like never before. World Environment Day 2020 is issuing a call to urgent action to protect biodiversity.
